“On this day in 1939, the first televised Major League baseball game was broadcast on station ‘W2XBS’, the station that was to become ‘WNBC-TV’. Announcer Red Barber called the game between the Cincinnati Reds and the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn, New York.

“At the time, television was still in its infancy. Regular programming did not yet exist, and very few people owned television sets – there were only about 400 in the New York area. Not until 1946 did regular network broadcasting catch on in the United States, and only in the mid-1950s did television sets become more common in the American household…”

‘A Man Is Still a Man’

We’ve expanded this post from 2014, when we were only on ‘Facebook’. The man who is the subject of this post has since ‘retired’ from martial arts:

‘It Was Just A Matter Of Time’

“Former ‘UFC’ heavyweight Tim Hague died today after suffering a knockout loss in a boxing match on Friday night in Canada. 

“Hague’s sister confirmed the fighter’s death in a post on her ‘Facebook’ page:

“It is with incredible sadness, sorrow and heartbreak to report that Tim has passed away today,” Jackie Neil wrote. “He was surrounded by family, listening to his favourite songs. We will miss him so greatly.”

“Hague was 34. 

‘Farewell to the Babe’

“On this day in 1935, Babe Ruth, one of the greatest players in the history of baseball, ends his Major League playing career after 22 seasons, 10 World Series and 714 home runs. The following year, Ruth, a larger-than-life figure whose name became synonymous with baseball, was one of the first five players inducted into the sport’s ‘Hall of Fame’. 

“George Herman Ruth was born February 6, 1895, into a poor family in Baltimore. As a child, he was sent to St. Mary’s Industrial School for Boys, a school run by Roman Catholic brothers, where he learned to play baseball and was a standout athlete.

“At 19, Ruth was signed by the Baltimore Orioles, then a Boston Red Sox minor league team. Ruth’s fellow teammates and the media began referring to him as team owner Jack Dunn’s newest “babe”, a nickname that stuck. Ruth would later acquire other nicknames, including “The Sultan of Swat” and “The Bambino”. 

‘Covering Up Sexual Abuse?’

“Eight of the {U.K.} professional football clubs contacted by the independent inquiry into the game’s sexual-abuse scandal have failed to respond and now risk disciplinary action unless they tell the investigators what they know…

“The ‘Football Association’ is ready to step in and has the power to impose sanctions if it considers the clubs who have failed to comply – missing two separate deadlines over the past four months and displaying a level of non-cooperation described as “deeply concerning” by one specialist child-abuse lawyer – are threatening to undermine the investigation into what the organisation’s chairman, Greg Clarke, has described as the worst crisis he can remember in the sport. 

‘A Cross-check Too Far’

“National Hockey League linesman Don Henderson has filed a $10.25 million lawsuit against Calgary Flames defenceman Dennis Wideman more than a year after Wideman hit Henderson from behind during a game against the Nashville Predators… The Flames are also listed as a defendant.

“According to his lawsuit, Henderson suffered injuries to his head, neck back, shoulder, and right knee. He also allegedly suffered a concussion, pain, numbness and tingling in his right arm and hand, shock anxiety and depression, headaches and permanent and partial disability…

“The government of Alberta is also listed as a plaintiff in the case.

‘Pervert At Work?’

“A 12-year-old girl was forced to withdraw from a chess tournament in Malaysia after her dress was considered “seductive”, her coach has claimed.

“Malaysian chess player Kaushal Khandar alleged that his student had been “extremely embarrassed” and “disturbed” by the actions of the {Muslim} ‘National Scholastic Chess Championship 2017’ director and chief arbiter, the ‘Star Online’ reported.

“He claimed that the tournament director had made a remark on the girl’s knee-length dress to the chief arbiter, who had stopped her competition in the middle of Round 2 and informed the student that her dress was improper and violated the dress code of the tournament, the report said.

‘NHL Says ‘NO’ To Olympics’

“Some familiar faces will be absent at the 2018 Winter Olympics: NHL players representing their countries in the men’s ice hockey tournament.

“After months of negotiating with the ‘IIHF’, world hockey’s governing body, the NHL announced…that its players would not be participating in the Pyeongchang Games. The NHL is opposed to a 17-day break in the NHL schedule to accommodate the matches.

‘Cheaters Shouldn’t Prosper’

“Canadian tennis star Eugenie Bouchard says Maria Sharapova, who returned from her 15-month doping ban on Wednesday, is a “cheater” and should not be allowed to compete in the sport again.

“Bouchard spoke to TRT World in an interview published Tuesday on ‘YouTube’ and did not hold back her thoughts.
